April 29, 2011

Some bride and groom’s find the label “classic” off-putting in relation to their wedding, as they believe it implies severity or an old-fashioned styling that doesn’t reflect a modern lifestyle. Of course, none of that is true! Erica and Jeremy’s wedding at the Four Season’s Hotel in Philadelphia was  a classic, elegant event that celebrated Jewish traditions but also had a refined but appealing sense of individuality.

Bridal Bouquet of the Week: Vibrant Summer Flowers in Tangerine, Orange, Coral, Cerise and Magenta

April 18, 2011

:: VIBRANT TEXTURAL BRIDAL BOUQUETS THAT ARE DESIGNED FOR EACH BRIDESMAID ::

Combining different types of flowers adds texture to the look of a hand-tied bouquet.  For instance, using large-headed flowers with smaller blooms nestled in between at different depths successfully creates visual impact, texture and drama.  For a Summer wedding, stunning bridesmaids’ bouquets were composed for seven different ladies using brightly colored flowers such as Cerise Mini Gerbera, Tangerine Spray Roses, Orange Tulips, Coral Tree Peonies, Magenta Peonies and Mango Sweetheart Roses.  It seems that today’s sophisticated brides enjoy knowing that although the floral components used for their bouquets may be the same, how those blooms are arranged may be as uniquely formed as the bridesmaids themselves.  No two are exactly the same.

WE LOVE: Wedding Ceremonies in Churches

April 7, 2011

The Greater Philadelphia area, including Wilmington, Delaware, Southern New Jersey, the Main Line suburbs and, of course, Center City, is rich in historic houses of worship of every denomination.  If you are considering holding your wedding ceremony in one of the area’s churches, you’ll need to make securing the date and location your first wedding planning priority.  [The Catholic Basilica Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, Photo:  Cliff Mautner] Read the rest of this entry »

What Exactly is a Ketubah? For many, it’s the perfect embodiment of faith, commitment and artistic expression.

February 15, 2011

Ketubah (pronounced “keh-TOO-buh”) is a traditional Hebrew marriage covenant dating back to the Talmudic Era.  According to the Jewish faith, marriage is a contractual agreement between two people with legal rights and obligations set forth in a marriage contract or Ketubah.  Written in Hebrew and Aramaic, many consider the Ketubah to be one of the original forms of a prenuptial agreement.  According to Jewish law “A man may not live with his wife even one single hour without a Ketubah in place.”

COMMUNITY: Entertaining “Cocktail-Style” for Non-Profit Events

December 7, 2010

Over the past 30 years of producing events in Philadelphia there’s one thing we’ve learned here at Evantine Design - you have to give back to the community that supports YOU!  Aside from whatever charitable organizations we might support personally, and there are many, as a company we proudly support non-profit organizations that turn to us to jazz up their events with that little bit of extra style.  Style, that is, that doesn’t blow the budget.

PLANNING: Favor Your Baby or Bridal Shower Guests with a Beauty Bar

October 19, 2010

Sometimes the ugly eyesore in the event space can become the party FAVORite.   In this case, an empty shelving unit became an interactive Beauty Bar at a hip baby shower.

PLANNING: Schedule Time in Your Wedding Day for Couple Shots and Candid Formals

June 28, 2010

There’s just something about these sweet photographs that really bring to mind just how important it is to make time for “couple shots” in your busy wedding day schedule.  Before you set the timeline, we suggest you speak at length with your photographer on what they NEED to get the photos you’ve hired them for!  For instance, some photographers request an hour or 90 minutes of time to shoot the bride and groom interacting together – once they’re dressed!  Not after the ceremony.  Other photographers may ask for two solid hours of time or a fast 45 minutes.  Point it, ASK.   The photographs of the two of you are personal, intimate photographs that are crucial in telling the story of your wedding day.  Just like the wedding in general, YOU determine the style and mood of how the day is portrayed.  If posed and formal photography is your thing, by all means, embrace it with gusto!  If you prefer an edgy, fashion-based photographic style, we’re certain there’s a photographer out there for you.  Like most couples, Jennifer and Andrew understood that storytelling might cross over into every imaginable style to reflect the various aspects of the weddng day as it unfolded.   The ending result was an accurate depiction of where they came from and who they are as a couple -  playful, loving and passionate.

February 26, 2010

Can you ever see enough photos of beautiful wedding cakes?  We think not.  We’re definitely obsessed with the ”cake art” from Truli Confectionary Arts.

A simple stacked stunner for an outdoor May wedding we designed at the Appleford Estate.  We placed the cake on a vintage cake stand which sat on top of an antique carved wooden table.  [photo by Rachel McGinn]

PLANNING: Save the Date to “Get Lost with Austin” Bar Mitzvah Cruise

September 18, 2009

One of our TOTALLY COOL clients came to us looking for creative and interesting ideas on where and how to throw their SUPER COOL son Austin’s Bar Mitzvah.  What could they do that was completely fresh and unheard of?  Have we heard this request before?  OF COURSE.  In fact, we heard it from this very client when they came to us to plan their daughter Sydney’s Bat Mitzvah two years ago!  (but that’s another story).

NOW, WHAT CAN WE DO FOR AUSTIN?  After talking to Austin it was clear that he wanted to share quality TIME with his family and friends over many days, not just for a few hours at a party.  Who would have thought he’d come up with a five day CRUISE the week before Christmas?   That Austin, he’s a clever one.   One of his favorite TV shows is “LOST” and he’s invited 100 of his friends and family to “Get Lost with Austin” for a week in the Western Caribbean.  The cruise ship, the Navigator of the Seas, is an unbelievable vessel that includes a  rock-climbing wall, a basketball court, an ice-skating rink and an in-line skating track. Dare we say there’s more? What about a five-story theatre, a casino, a miniature golf course and a spectacular three-story dining room?  The 138,000-ton nautical wonder has it all and will sail to Jamaica, Haiti and Miami.  Austin’s guests will enjoy family-style dinners, private cocktail parties, basketball tournaments, a private disco club as well sandy beaches, rain forests, waterfalls and fun-filled days in the surf.  Bring on the SUNSCREEN!

Take a look at the fantastic Save the Date below that includes a wooden box burned with his custom logo, a message-in-a-bottle containing a detailed map of the cruise and a “passport” containing all the relevant travel information.

There are countless surprises, favors and thematic “Get Lost” mysteries planned for the trip!  Shhhhhhh.  When we get back, we’ll make sure to share more info and photos on the celebration!

REAL STORIES: A Cocktail Style Wedding-by-the-Sea with Vintage Details and Plenty of Personal Style

July 24, 2009

Although open-air, outdoor weddings do take place often on the West Coast of the United States, back here on the East Coast we’re not as lucky with the weather. For a seaside wedding at an historic home in Lewes, Delaware, we needed to hope for fabulous sunshine but plan for wet weather, you know, just in case Mother Nature didn’t follow the carefully-drawn plan.  Which of course means tents would need to be secured from the get-go in the wedding planning process. Again, just in case our open-air luck went sour.  Tents ensure that your outdoor event will be a success, come rain or come shine. But, every so often, Mother Nature does come through, offering up the gift of a perfect summer evening.  On those rare occasions, like this one, when we are lucky enough not to tent, magic can truly happen!

Guests were welcomed through old picket gates weathered by years of salt and wind. Vintage depression glasses placed on an old farm table allowed guests to sip lemonade and sparkling water as they wandered through the gardens on their way to the ceremony.  An emotional wedding ceremony took place under strong, centuries-old trees nestled right next to the historic shingle-clad home.  Just a few Asian paper lanterns were hung here and there for a pop of whimsical color.  Having their wedding outside, and not in a church or synagogue, allowed the bride and groom to get creative with their wedding ceremony.  Not only did the bride’s aunt serve as the officiant, but the couple’s friends and family members took turns sharing beloved readings, book passages and poems. As it should be, music was an important player in the ceremony as well. From strings to flute to guitar and even a gospel choir, secular and non-secular music was interspersed throughout the ceremony as emotional punctuation.

Inspired by her grandmother’s journal, wedding planner Melissa Paul created a “wedding journal” to be used by the ceremony participants that would later serve as a lovely keepsake of the day.

The bride, a former wedding photographer herself, wanted to infuse the wedding with happy colors that would bring to mind the her family’s nostalgic love for the beach.  Mixing soft shades of yellow, pink, blue and aqua with crisp white and warm ivory proved charming in every subtley-designed wedding element.  From yellow and white check ribbon to pale pink cocktail napkins and sky blue striped neck ties, the seaside color palette worked beautifully. Ocean-related details, such as sea shells and sand, were used sparingly but specifically throughout the wedding design.

The bride and groom incorporated the light and breezy summer tones and textures into their bridal attire, encouraging their bridal party, family and friends to embrace the entire color palette.  The bride wore a custom-designed yellow and lace gown and sassy gold metallic Gucci platforms. Bridesmaids carried small bouquets of early summer blooms, including peonies, chamomile, garden roses, lady’s mantle, and veronica.

After the ceremony, guests wandered down to the family dock on the canal for cocktails and conversation. White market umbrellas were placed over cocktail tables dressed in ocean blue linens and square glass vases filled with seasonal blue, white and green-gray flowers.  The brides’s starfish motif was used on everything from the playful beach-themed welcome canvas tote to a “wedding memory” station contained in a personalized galvanized bucket on the dock.

A Scottish bagpiper proclaimed that cocktails were over, before leading the guests over to the bride’s family orchard for the rest of the wedding celebration.

In the orchard behind the beach house guests find a cocktail-style wedding reception rather than a traditional sit-down dinner dance. In the center of the entire area is a large wooden plank dance floor and multi-tiered stage for the orchestra. All around the orchard, under the trees, guests are welcome to sit at low cocktail tables and high community tables dressed in various pink and yellow linens. Small floral centerpieces of pink peonies, blush and pale yellow roses, soft green foliage and white wildflowers are displayed in polished and tarnished silver pieces.  Antique dark wood tables, chairs, hutches and stools are add a touch of homestyle elegance.  Multiple food stations offer savory foods and sweet bites, changing often as the party continued through the night.

Fresh stylish foods and impeccable service was provided by the clever ladies of Wilmington catering company, Sugarfoot Fine Foods. Classic Bellinis made with fresh white peach nectar and sparkling prosecco were butler passed on elegant silver trays, along with tasty hors d’oeuvres like heart-shaped smoked chicken quesadillas and Maryland blue crab and white corn salad.

Outdoor living rooms with upholstered sofas, leather arm chairs, antique rugs and glass coffee tables were popular spots during the night, most especially for casual wedding party photos.

An existing gazebo paid tribute to family weddings: the bride’s mother’s wedding gown was on display, as were family wedding photos and painted portraits. While visiting the gazebo, guests were invited to leave their wishes and blessings for the bride and groom on deckled cotton paper cards. As the sun went down, the entire orchard was lit up by dozens of suspended muslin lanterns. Brought down from New York for the party, the rockin’ awesome dance orchestra, Soul System, kept the party on the dance floor until the wee hours of the party.

Delicate fabric lanterns were suspended from the trees to add a magical glow to the event as the sun faded from the sky.6842_2_dancing67630035

One of the most important elements to incorporate into the wedding design was the bride’s extensive collection of vintage cake toppers.  Collected over twenty years, the cake toppers were displayed on seven different fondant-covered weddings cakes that were set out on a long antique plank table.  The old-fashioned “cake walk” display of butter yellow, pale pink and warm ivory wedding cakes allowed guests to sample multiple flavored cakes cut-to-order.

This last photo from amazing photographer Liz Banfield says it all. Perfect. From the many beautiful details to the weather. Just Perfect.

At the end of the night, all the guests surrounded the bride and groom’s vintage 1974 Mercedes convertible for a big end of the night send off with sparklers! Yes, it’s been done, but it’s still one of the most playful ly effective moments you can capture of the day!  Thank you Mother Nature for keeping the rain at bay for this outdoor celebration!
